We support closing the digital divide!
Wednesday, 16 February 2022

The last few years has seen the need to bridge the digital divide become more important than ever, with so many of our Kiwi youth struggling to stay connected during the pandemic. Help is on its way!

Recycle a Device (RAD) is an Aotearoa not for profit that tracks down donations of old and outdated laptops and tablets. They don’t stop there though, RAD then teach high school students to refurbish the laptops which are then gifted to rangatahi who need them for employment, education, connecting with services, and general participation in society, but would otherwise have difficulty accessing them.

NZ Compare have worked hard to help educate Kiwis in taking control and feeling empowered, that’s why it just makes sense for us to support a brilliant organisation like Recycle a Device!

Participation in RAD encourages all communities involved (from businesses to schools to device recipients) to rethink their approach to waste and how they can participate in the circular economy, while also equipping students and community members with project management, responsibility, teamwork, problem solving and STEM skills to carry them into the future. RAD's goal for 2022 is to get 5000 devices into the hands of those who need them. We want to support that goal!

To keep it simple, RAD supports businesses by offering a low-cost, low effort and data secure option for reducing e-waste and retiring ex-fleet laptops, making progress towards corporate social responsibility and sustainability goals, and supports the community by making a positive difference in the lives of young people.

If more Kiwis support other Kiwis in the good they are doing in communities nationwide, then that good spreads. It’s that easy! RAD creates opportunities and develops our youth, get behind them!

What can you donate?

Laptops - which are less than ten years old and come with a charger.

Tablets -  We accept tablets which are less than 6 years old and come with a charger.

What if my laptop/tablet has personal data on it?

RAD partner with Entelar (formerly Telegistics), who securely wipe your laptop or tablet to a high standard so your information is removed before it goes to a high school for refurbishment. Entelar will provide you with a certificate confirming the device has been wiped. Businesses or individuals may prefer to wipe their laptops themselves before they donate them to RAD, which is also fine!

Can I drop off my laptop/tablet to RAD?

YES! RAD has drop off locations in Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin. Get in touch with the RAD team for info on using their drop off locations.
