Wait…how much mobile and broadband data did Kiwis use in 2021?!
Monday, 21 March 2022

Nowadays, Kiwis are using huge amounts of mobile and broadband data! We’re using data for everything we do. From work and study to streaming and playing video games. But have you ever wondered how much mobile and broadband data we're actually using??

Well, the recent report by the Commerce Commission confirms we’re using heaps of data! Plus, they’ve revealed the new trend when it comes to the choices Kiwis make around their technology.

All of this demonstrates just how important a great mobile and broadband plan is for Kiwis! Let’s dive in to see why.

Kiwis are using more data than ever before!

The 15th Annual Telecommunications Monitoring Report done by the Commerce Commission was recently released. This report examined the performance and trends within the telecommunications market for 2021.

Their report unsurprisingly showed an increase in mobile and broadband usage! The average amount of mobile data used by a consumer (for a month) increased from 3.29 GB in 2020 to 4.21 GB in 2021. While the average amount of broadband data used by one household (for a month) increased from 284 GB in 2020 to 330 GB in 2021. That’s a lot of data being used by Kiwis across the motu!

Broadband data usage continues to increase from 2020, in large part due to the lockdowns and more people working from home. Kiwis are continuing to choose unlimited data plans. 79 percent of households are on these plans!

It’s clear that Kiwis want the fastest internet speeds possible, so there’s also a continued increase in consumers switching to fibre. In the last year, copper connections have dropped by 30 percent. Most of these consumers are changing to fibre but some have opted for wireless broadband. This isn’t surprising as Aotearoa has some of the highest rates of consumers connected to wireless broadband in the OECD. This technology accounts for 15 percent of broadband connections across the country.

While wireless may be a great option for you, fibre still delivers the fastest speeds you could ask for! It’s the best for all that data we’re using!

The report also revealed that there’s been a major increase in Kiwis choosing uncapped mobile plans! 2021 saw a major rise in residential and business consumers jumping onto uncapped ‘endless’ mobile data plans. From the previous year, it was up 143 percent for residents and 165 percent for businesses. It’s clear Kiwis want heaps of data wherever they go!

Consumers want technology that meets exactly their needs!

One part of the report that was super interesting was how it shows a growing trend of Kiwis wanting more flexibility and greater connectivity when it comes to our technology.

“We have all had to adapt our routines and lifestyles to deal with the range of disruptions and challenges that the pandemic has created. Telecommunications can go a long way to help us adapt, so the findings and trends we have seen in our monitoring report this year reflect the shifting priorities of our purchasing choices,” says Tristan Gilbertson (Telecommunications Commissioner).

Gilbertson added that this is a shift, “...towards products that enable greater flexibility in the way Kiwis work, study, play and stay connected.”

He goes on to say that Kiwis know what they want when it comes to technology and love new gadgets. The main thing for Kiwis is to have telecommunication products and services that offer, “...high levels of flexibility alongside functionality and connectivity.”

Kiwis expect their technology to be able to keep up with their busy lives. They want tech products that work for their needs and are reliable. Also, they want super fast mobile and broadband plans to connect them to their work, study and fun!

At the end of the day, this report highlights that Kiwis want their specific needs met through the technology and telecommunication services that we pay for. We won’t settle for less.
