Long Weekend Activity Ideas 2024

Long Weekend Activity Ideas with NZ Compare
Tuesday, 23 January 2024

The start of the calendar year in Aotearoa is simply spoiled with public holidays and long weekends.

Many of us may use the time to simply relax at home. Others may hit the road to head up to their holiday batch for the weekend, and spend the days lounging at the beach and swimming.

If you are stumped as to what to do, we have put together a list of free or cheap activities to do during the string of upcoming long weekends.

Discover Art and Culture

Take the journey into New Zealand’s museums. If you are in Auckland, the Auckland War Memorial Museum blends geology, palaeontology and archeology, featuring exhibitions and galleries that explore ancient and centuries-old civilisations, including the Egyptians and the Māori.

There is also the must-visit Te Papa museum in Wellington. You could spend days exploring these exhibitions and galleries. Take in Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War – and garner a glimpse into the eyes and experiences of New Zealand soldiers in World War 1. Other exhibitions allow intimate explorations of Mana Whenua, the navigation of the Pacific by waka hourua, and an insight into the curious lives and traditions of the Moriori – the Māori community who inhabit the Chatham Islands. Te Papa also explores the power of the earth and the diverse wildlife of different global regions. Including a variety of interactive learning opportunities, the Te Papa museum is a wonderful family activity for a long weekend day out.

Promenade through Markets

New Zealand communities and cities often host wonderful farmer’s markets. Matakana Farmers Market is the perfect Saturday morning activity, just outside of Auckland. It features boutique arts and crafts, locally sourced fresh produce, hand-crafted sauces, olive oils and vinegars. The market is situated en-route to beaches such as Tawharanui Regional park and Mangawhai. You could also hit your local night markets.

Movie Marathon

Shove that popcorn into the microwave, pour the lollies into a bowl, and crack open the fizzy drinks – or brew a tea. Arrange the pillows and snuggle up on the couch or in bed for a day or afternoon dedicated solely to storytelling and recharging. Some neighbourhoods also host movies in the park – which is a wonderful free activity to enjoy with the whole whanau.

Or, if you’d prefer to just relax at home, we have curated a list of awesome TV shows to watch across a range of subscription services.

Day Trip to Somewhere New

Pack a picnic, some snacks, and water bottles, jump into the car with your friends or family, and take a day adventure to somewhere new. Maybe a national park near your home town or city? Or a beach? What about a petting farm or a hike? Explore a place new to you with the people you hold close to make wonderful new memories during the long weekend, and ensure the day off work is worthwhile! Simply getting away from your usual environment, even for a day, can do wonders for our wellbeing.

Visit Botanical Gardens

Several cities across the country are home to unique botanical gardens. Hamilton is famous for its enormous collection, featuring Romanesque landscaping designs, Japanese-themed compilations, and Indian-inspired styles and architecture, amongst many others. Featuring thousands of unique plant species, this is a wonderful place to gain a glimpse into the flora and fauna of different regions of the world. Entry is free, but the gardens do offer tours and audio-tours for those wishing to gain a deeper understanding of each garden.
