Last week, 2degrees announced that it will be merging with Vocus Group, who owns Orcon, Slingshot and Flip!
While we definitely saw this coming, it’s still a major development in the telecommunications industry and will have many implications for Kiwi consumers!

2degrees is joining up with Vocus Group (Orcon, Slingshot and Flip) to become the third largest telecommunications company in Aotearoa, with an annual revenue of $1.2 billion!
Orcon CEO Mark Callander will be leading the company that now provides both mobile and broadband coverage to "98.5% of the places Kiwis live and work".
Callander said that the merger will see 2degrees continue to disrupt and challenge the market. He said that the company’s future strategy will focus on expanding its 5G network and fixed wireless broadband.
He also announced a new 2degrees unlimited wireless 5G broadband plan, starting at as little as $65 a month! Callander said that, “Unlimited 5G home broadband just makes sense – with the speeds that 5G offers, people don’t want to be constrained by data caps.”
Callander goes on to mention the exciting future he sees for 2degrees and its customers. He said that, “2degrees is a well-recognised and trusted brand, now offering New Zealanders access to a world-class mobile network, a national fibre network, as well as energy capability. 2degrees is a business that is well-positioned for strong growth into the future.”
The new entity of 2degrees and Vocus will bring many benefits to Kiwi consumers all across the motu!
Callander said that, “The combined business has a tremendous amount of infrastructure, and we intend to leverage this to shake up the telco landscape and better serve customers across mobile and fixed [broadband] services.”
“Today we have brought together two organisations which for decades have disrupted and challenged the New Zealand telco market, lowering the cost of services and driving product innovation through a relentless customer focus,” said Callander.
In other words, the new entity will bring better service to its customers as well as pushing innovation and increasing competition in the market.
For 2degrees customers, they’ll start to notice some immediate changes very soon including new self-service portals, new applications for interacting with the company and brand new products. On the other hand, their long term goals are more focused on digitising and simplifying their business practices.
For Kiwis who aren’t with 2degrees, they may be worried that this merger will decrease competition in the mobile and broadband market. Don’t stress though, the Commerce Commission approved the merger as they believe it will not result in less competition. So rest assured that you will still have many options to choose from and that providers will continue to compete and offer low prices.
If anything, this merger will result in more competition as Callander states, “Central to the 2degrees ethos is its vision of Fighting for Fair. As we move forward, we’ll have a laser focus on award-winning customer service, innovation, and our commitment to bringing competition to Kiwis – from prepaying mobile users, to households, and businesses of all sizes right up to large corporates.”
One VERY IMPORTANT point to note though is that this merger will mean that the Vocus Group brands- Orcon, Slingshot and Flip will be phased out very soon, with 2degrees becoming the sole brand.
This means that we have no idea if the great deals that Orcon, Slingshot and Flip currently offer will stick around!
