As the digital world continues to develop, and our reliance on it grows, fibre speed is going to be more of a concern. Here in New Zealand, our fibre network offers a range of different speeds to Kiwi households—each speed typically suits a certain household size, and their internet needs. There is fibre 50, fibre 300, and fibre 900.
The next generation of fibre internet is hyperfibre. With its lightning fast speeds, it’s the fastest on the market. It can reach speeds of 2000, 4000 and even 8000 Mbps. The latency is incredibly low and the bandwidth is significantly high—no wonder it’s considered the future of fibre!
But is it worth it? Well, not everyone needs hyperfibre just yet. The fibre speeds mentioned above are a lot cheaper than hyperfibre plans, and will suit most households. You can try our free broadband speed calculator to see what speed your household needs. If you are on a plan that’s too fast, or too slow, it’s a good idea to compare different fibre plans to find one that better matches your speed needs—you might even unlock a better deal, and save money!
While hyperfibre is the future of fibre in New Zealand, it’s the most expensive option right now. Therefore, it’s not necessary for everyone, as we mentioned above. But who might need it? Some households might find hyperfibre worth it. If the following points apply to you, it may be worth comparing hyperfibre plans.
If you have a large household of lots of gamers, hyperfibre may be worth it for you. Hyperfibre speeds and capabilities will ensure everyone can play at the same time, from different devices, without experiencing buffering or interruptions.
If your home has several wired devices, such as a Playstation or Xbox, hyperfibre may be a great option for you.
Hyperfibre is an incredibly fast fibre, capable of supporting 4K streaming and gaming. If you want to participate in this activity, and on more than one device, hyperfibre may certainly be worth it for you.
Chorus, a wholesale fibre network provider in New Zealand, has recently announced that there will be increases in fibre speeds coming to the network in June 2025. These speed changes include Home Fibre Starter and Home Fibre 300.
From June 2025, fibre 50 plans will see upload and download speeds increase from 50/10 Mbps to 100/20Mbps. Kiwis on fibre 300 plans will get a speed increase from 300/100Mbps to 500/100Mbps.
These speed increases won’t cost residents anything, and they are designed to respond to the growing demand for data across the motu. Speed increases in the fibre network ensure that our broadband is future-proofed, ready to anticipate our developing reliance on the digital world for more activities including streaming, learning, working from home, and even online doctor’s appointments.
For those on fibre 50 and fibre 300 plans, there is only a few months left to wait for faster speeds! While it might not be as fast as hyperfibre, these new speeds will better support all our online activities, including streaming and gaming.
