The Measuring Broadband New Zealand programme was started by The Commerce Commission to independently analyse the broadband performance of various providers and plans across the motu.
The programme has been carried out by SamKnows, a leading company that measures internet performance. The most recent report collected data from the 1st to 31st March 2022.
The latest report from the Measuring Broadband New Zealand programme demonstrates that most Kiwis are getting incredibly fast broadband speeds that makes streaming a breeze!
This report highlights that if you want to stream without any hiccups, you need to be on a Fibre connection!
While broadband speeds across various plans and providers are stable, it’s clear that Fibre connections offer the best speeds. Almost all of the Fibre 300, Fibre Max and HFC Max (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) plans that were tested, easily handled running four streams of Netflix simultaneously.
“Whether you use broadband for streaming TV and movies, online gaming or social media, this latest report shows that performance remains consistently high, particularly for fibre and HFC [Hybrid Fibre Coaxial],” says Tristan Gilbertson, Telecommunications Commissioner.
If you want to stream till your heart’s content, then you need to be on a Fibre connection! It’ll handle anything you throw at it.

This report is incredibly important as it puts the power into Kiwi consumers’ hands! It presents unbiased information that helps Kiwis make informed decisions on which broadband provider or plan is best for them.
It also keeps providers in check, since it ensures they compete on performance, not just price. Similarly, it impacts their advertising as they now have to use the data from the report rather than theoretical or “up to” speeds. This is due to the new marketing codes implemented by the Telecommunications Forum. This in turn is fantastic for consumers as we now have more transparency on what providers can actually offer!
Without this report, we wouldn’t have a clue about how strong our broadband network is in New Zealand. It’s truly world class and delivers fast speeds that allow Kiwis to easily stream their favourite TV shows and movies. Knowing this information is crucial since it highlights that if you aren’t getting these speeds, then you better do something about it!
Hearing that blazing fast speeds are available on many broadband plans may have you thinking…why aren’t I getting these speeds?
It comes down to two things. Either, you’re on the wrong connection OR you’re with the wrong provider or plan.
If you want the best results when streaming, you need to check that you have a connection that can handle it (like Fibre) AND you need to make sure that your provider or plan is actually offering you the fastest speeds possible.
